Machines · the pot comes out of the stakes

Jackpot machines

A progressive jackpot is fed from the stakes of every player. That share is missing from the regular paytable — and that explains how the game feels.

On a progressive jackpot a small share of every stake flows into a shared pot that grows until somebody hits it. The share is part of the payout rate, but in practice it benefits a single player only.

Why the game feels flatter

Because the regular paytable is thinner by exactly that share. On paper the rate is unchanged; in experience it is not, as long as the pot does not drop.

Two machines with the same payout rate. The rate is an average over millions of spins; what one evening makes of it is decided by volatility, and that rarely sits on the same data sheet.

The participation condition people miss

Many jackpot titles require a minimum stake, or all lines in play, to take part. Anyone staking below that plays the same game with no claim on the pot — and pays the share in all the same. The condition stands in the information window.

And the withdrawal

Large jackpots are often governed separately in the terms — as an exception to the withdrawal limit, or as instalments spread over years. This is the one case in which reading the limit clause beforehand really does pay off. How the clause is read.

No payout rates without a source. Wherever a rate appears on these pages, the place it comes from appears with it. The only reliable place is the information window inside the game itself — the same machine can be set up with a different rate at two operators.
