Online slots are by a wide margin the largest segment in any casino and the one with the worst information. Few products get written about so much and documented so little.
The first number: the payout rate
It states which share of all stakes flows back over the long run. 96 % does not mean that ninety-six euro come back out of a hundred, but that across a very large number of spins this share flows back — spread across everyone playing the same machine.
The rate stands in the game's information window, reachable through the menu in the corner. That is the only source that holds for the house you are sitting in: the same machine can be set up differently at two operators.
The second number: the volatility
It describes the distribution. Two machines with the same rate can produce completely different evenings: one pays small amounts often, the other large amounts rarely. For what somebody actually experiences, this is the more important of the two figures. Both side by side.
What the operator controls and what it does not
| The game mechanics | the maker — reels, lines, bonus rounds |

| The rate setting | the maker supplies variants, the casino picks one |
| The range of titles | the casino — which studios it carries at all |
| The bonus weighting | the casino — what percentage a title counts towards wagering |

Two of the four rows belong to the operator, and both can be read on its own site. Everything else is a property of the machine.
