At blackjack the player makes decisions, and those decisions have measurable consequences. That is why a basic strategy exists — and why the house edge is not fixed but hangs on the rules of the particular table.
The table rules that actually change something
- Payout for a blackjack. 3:2 is the standard rule; 6:5 makes the arithmetic markedly worse and stands in small print on the felt.
- Behaviour on soft 17. If the dealer draws, it gets less favourable for the player.
- Doubling after a split. Allowed or not — a small but measurable difference.
- Number of decks. Fewer decks are more favourable for the player.
These four details stand at the table or in its information panel. Reading them takes ten seconds and does more than any way of playing.
What basic strategy achieves
It is a table: your own hand against the dealer's up card gives the arithmetically best decision. It does not make the game profitable, it lowers the disadvantage to the minimum the table rules permit.
Insurance
Offered when the dealer shows an ace. It is a bet of its own with its own, markedly worse arithmetic, and it is therefore declined in every basic strategy table — regardless of your own hand.
Card counting in a live casino
It does not work here, because the shoes are shuffled frequently and many variants use automatic shuffling machines. What remains is basic strategy and the choice of a table with favourable rules.
