At baccarat two hands are played against one another, and the player bets on which one wins. The rules for when a third card is drawn are fixed — there is nothing to decide, only something to stake.
The three fields, sorted by arithmetic
| Banker | the most favourable bet, the cut on the win notwithstanding |
|---|---|
| Player | marginally less favourable, but with nothing deducted |
| Tie | paid high and by a distance the worst arithmetic |

The cut taken from banker wins — usually five per cent — looks like a disadvantage and is the compensation for that hand winning slightly more often. After the deduction banker remains the better of the two bets.
Why the tie is bad despite the high odds
The payout — usually eight to one — sits well below what the actual frequency would justify. That gap is precisely the house edge, and here it is several times larger than on the other two fields.
Side bets
Pairs, perfect pairs, bonus fields: each with its own arithmetic, all of them less favourable than the base game. They are placed in plain sight, and that is no accident.
What varies between operators
The size of that cut, the table limits and the range of side bets. The base rules are the same everywhere. What else varies in the live section.
