This distinction is missing from almost every overview and decides what is being talked about at all. In one case there is a house edge, in the other a fee.
Casino poker against the house
Variants such as Casino Hold'em or Three Card Poker are played against the dealer. They have a fixed house edge that follows from the paytables, and in that sense they are a table game like blackjack — with fewer decisions.
Poker against other players
Here the house takes no share of the result but a fee from the pot or from the tournament buy-in — the rake. There is no house edge in the usual sense; the money moves between the players, less that fee.
What follows from that
- At casino poker the paytable decides, and it stands at the table.
- At player poker the rake structure decides how much stays at the table at all.
- Side bets exist in both variants, and in both they are the expensive option.
What to look at on the operator's side
Whether both exist at all — many casinos carry only the variant against the house. And whether poker tables count towards bonus wagering; frequently they do not. Where the weighting stands.
